I’m Helen - founder and chief of Shetland Stitch Club. I am a Londoner by birth, and a Shetlander by choice.
I moved here in 2024, charmed by Shetland’s dramatic landscapes, epic wildlife and warm welcome. Before the big move North I had spent seven years teaching Textiles in London secondary schools, and with some success! Some of my former pupils have gone on to study at Central St. Martins, London College of Fashion and the Royal School of Needlework, and others now working in creative roles at Burberry, Urban Outfitters and the Royal Opera House Wardrobe Dept.
I believe that in a world of fast fashion, sewing skills are more valuable than ever before. Yes, home-sewn is often more expensive than ready-made - but it also gives you complete autonomy over what you put on your body. If you can sew, you can make exactly the clothes you want in exactly the fabrics you want, and make them fit your own body perfectly. You will keep these clothes for longer, you will know that they’re free from forced labour, and when you get compliments (which you will!) you can gleefully say “Thanks! I made it!”.
I live in North Mainland with my husband, David, and our rescue dog Honey. I also knit, and design knitting patterns under the name Way Way North . I attend a weekly Makkin and Yakkin group, and volunteer at our local Peerie Makkers. I also do occasional work at Mareel. Say hello if you see me!
