Technical Tuesday: SEAM FINISHES

£40.00

Where and When

Radio Room, Islesburgh Centre, Lerwick.

Tuesday 3rd March, 7pm - 9:30pm.

About the Class

Nothing speaks of quality like beautifully finished seams. Elevate your garments by making them as beautiful inside as out, and explore how different seam finishes can improve the comfort and longevity of your handmade clothes.

For the third of our Technical Tuesdays, we’ll take a deep dive into the world of seam finishes and their uses. We’ll look at how different finishes are suited to different types of seams and fabrics, and practice Edge-Stitched Seams, French Seams,  and Flat Fell Seams. You’ll leave with a small collection of samples and an appetite for elevated garment-making.

This is a short and detailed class, and participants are expected to have some basic knowledge of how to use a sewing machine. If you’d like to improve your sewing machine knowledge to prepare for this class, you may like to attend a Get to Know a Sewing Machine class before you come.

What You’ll Learn

  • Choosing an appropriate finish for the project

  • Sewing Edge-Stitched Seams, French Seams, and Flat Fell Seams

What’s Included:

  • Calico fabric for making samples

  • Thread

  • Access to a Singer Heavy Duty 4423 Sewing Machine

  • Access to an iron and ironing board

  • Access to basic sewing tools: paper scissors, pins, needles, fabric shears, tailor’s chalk, measuring tape, unpicker
